The extra complexity built into quality Mac recovery programs
You may have noticed that programs to recover Mac data cost a bit more than a comparable data recovery program for Windows PCs. While the demand for Mac recovery software is substantially smaller than that of Windows recovery this is not the reason for the cost differential. The reason that Mac recovery software costs more than its Windows counterpart is that the process of scanning for and recovering deleted files on a computer using Mac OS X as its operating system is far more complicated than that of rescuing files lost on Windows.
There are many reasons for this. An important one is that when OS X moves to access files on your Apple computer hard drive it must go through a few extra steps. These steps include disk verification and disk initialization. Programs to recover Mac data must be built so as to circumvent these two steps and directly access file areas holding the underlying Mac OS X based data.
